Raw, vegan chocolate mousse
I attended a raw food detox day earlier this year with raw food expert and writer Susie Meggitt. It was a great day and very educational, but the best part was the tasting, which made me forget my manners and boldy ask for more of the same. This was good.
Meggitt makes an astonishingly healthy chocolate dessert and once I tasted that rich, glorious chocolate mousse, I was hooked and weirdly elated to get my guilt free chocolate fix.

healthy, guilt free chocolate goodness
This recipe is great for vegans and the lactose intolerant, but I have found that whether health conscious of not, most people love it, and they always come back for more. I never tell my guests that avocado replaces butter, cream and eggs, but when I reveal the secret they are always surprised and want to know how its made.
Raw chocolate mousse ingredients (serves two)
1/4 cup pitted medjool dates, soaked
1/4 cup pure maple syrup or raw honey
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
3/4 cup mashed avocados (1+1/2 avocados)
1/4 cup unsweetened raw cacao powder or raw cacao nibs ground in a coffee grinder into a fine powder
1/4 cup water
Instructions
Blend dates, maple syrup and vanilla in a food processor until smooth.
Add avocado and raw cocoa powder, process until creamy.
Add the water and process briefly.
Stored in a sealed container. Mousse will keep for three days in refrigerator or two weeks in freezer. Yields 1 cup, increase amounts for more.

Undercover chocoholics
Nutritionists are occasional chocoholics, but we feel ten guiltier when we fall off the wagon, and occasionally we don’t practice what we preach because lets face it, its hard. However, we make up for it by knowing about the healthiest way to eat chocolate – raw. And we know how to detox too, because we seem to spend our whole lives doing it.
Raw, chocolate goodness
Not many people know about raw chocolate and its inherent goodness. This form of chocolate is unprocessed and retains the goodness that would be lost through commercial processing. Much of our craving for chocolate can be attributed to magnesium deficiency, but raw chocolate provides a very good source of this mineral. Magnesium can be likened to nature’s tranquiliser which soothes tense muscles and aids relaxation. You can see now why so many people reach out for that trusty chocolate bar when stressed - nutritionists included..
